Maintenance

Both materials are low-maintenance compared to wood, which needs periodic painting, staining, and sealing. Vinyl and fiberglass frames both resist moisture, won’t rot, and can be cleaned with soap and water. Neither material attracts termites or other pests.

Vinyl’s main maintenance concern over time is discoloration. Prolonged UV exposure can cause white or light-colored vinyl frames to yellow or fade, and because the color runs through the material, there’s no way to refinish or repaint it without complications. Fiberglass holds its color better and, if it does fade, can simply be repainted.

In those conditions, vinyl’s lower cost often makes it the smarter value.

Its dimensional stability means the frame-to-glass seal stays tight through years of freeze-thaw cycles and thermal stress. Which One Should You Choose

Here’s a straightforward way to think about the decision:

  • Choose fiberglass if you want maximum durability, you live in a climate with temperature extremes, you plan to stay in the home long-term, or appearance and paint flexibility are important to you
