Simple ways to find air leaks around your windows and what to do once you’ve confirmed the problem
Drafts Are Easy to Feel but Easy to Ignore
Most homeowners know something is off before they ever confirm it. You feel a chill near certain windows in winter even when they’re closed. The rooms closest to the street always seem harder to heat. Your energy bills creep up every year without a clear explanation. These are all signs that your windows may be leaking air, and the sooner you identify the problem, the sooner you can stop paying to heat or cool the outdoors.
Detecting drafty windows doesn’t require special equipment or a professional visit. There are several simple tests you can do yourself in a few minutes, and the results will tell you whether you’re dealing with a minor seal issue that can be fixed with weatherstripping or a bigger problem that calls for window replacement.
The Hand Test
The simplest way to check for drafts is to hold your hand about an inch from the edges of a closed window on a cold or windy day. Move your hand slowly around the entire perimeter of the frame, along the sash where the window meets the frame, and around the lock hardware. If you feel cool air moving against your skin, you’ve found a leak.
Pay special attention to the bottom rail of the lower sash on double-hung windows, the meeting rail where the upper and lower sashes overlap, and the corners of the frame where the casing meets the wall. These are the most common failure points for aging weatherstripping and deteriorating seals.
The Candle or Incense Test
For a more sensitive check, light a candle, a stick of incense, or a thin piece of tissue paper and hold it near the edges of the window. Watch the flame or the smoke. If it flickers, bends, or gets pulled in a specific direction, air is moving through a gap at that point. This method picks up leaks that are too subtle for your hand to feel but still significant enough to affect your comfort and your energy bills.

Visual Inspection
Sometimes you can spot the problem without any testing at all. Take a close look at the following areas on each window:
- Weatherstripping along the sash edges — if it’s cracked, compressed, peeling, or missing entirely, air is getting through
- Caulking around the exterior frame where it meets the siding — gaps, cracks, or sections that have pulled away indicate a broken seal
- The glazing putty on older single-pane windows — if it’s crumbling or has fallen out in places, both air and moisture are entering freely
- Condensation or frost forming on the interior glass in winter — this suggests the glass surface is cold enough for moisture to collect, which often accompanies air leaks
- Visible daylight around the frame edges — if you can see light coming through from outside, air is following the same path
Foggy glass between the panes of a double-pane window is a separate issue. That indicates a failed seal in the insulated glass unit itself, which means the window has lost its insulating gas fill and is no longer performing as designed. That problem can’t be fixed with weatherstripping. It requires replacing the glass unit or the entire window.
What Causes Windows to Become Drafty
Windows don’t usually become drafty overnight. The process is gradual, and it happens for a few common reasons:
- Weatherstripping wears out over time from repeated opening and closing, UV exposure, and temperature cycling
- Caulking around the exterior frame dries out, shrinks, and cracks as it ages, creating gaps that widen over the years
- Wood frames swell and shrink with moisture and temperature changes, eventually warping enough that the sash no longer sits flush in the frame
- The insulated glass seal fails on double-pane windows, allowing the argon or krypton gas to escape and reducing the thermal barrier between inside and outside
- Settling of the house shifts the window frame slightly out of square, creating uneven gaps that the original weatherstripping can no longer cover
Some of these causes are fixable without replacing the window. Others indicate that the window has reached the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced entirely.
When Weatherstripping and Caulking Can Fix It
If your window frames are structurally sound, the glass is intact, and the only issue is worn weatherstripping or cracked caulking, a repair may be all you need. The Department of Energy’s guide to weatherstripping explains that weatherstripping is used to seal air leaks around movable building components like operable windows, while caulk is used for stationary gaps around the frame.
Replacing old weatherstripping and reapplying exterior caulk are relatively inexpensive projects that most homeowners can handle themselves or have done for a modest cost. If the draft disappears after the repair, you’ve solved the problem without the expense of new windows.
However, weatherstripping is a temporary fix on windows that are fundamentally failing. If the frame is warped, the glass seal has broken, or the window has to be forced shut to close properly, new weatherstripping will provide only marginal improvement. In those cases, replacement is the more effective and longer-lasting solution.
When Replacement Is the Better Answer
Replacement makes more sense when the drafts are caused by problems that weatherstripping can’t address. According to ENERGY STAR, replacing old single-pane windows with ENERGY STAR certified models can lower household energy bills by an average of twelve percent. If your windows are old enough that the frames, glass, and seals are all degrading together, replacement addresses every source of the draft at once rather than patching one while the others continue to leak.
Signs that replacement is the right move include:
- The windows are single-pane or the double-pane seal has failed on multiple units
- The frames are visibly warped, rotted, or no longer hold the sash securely
- You’ve already replaced the weatherstripping and the drafts returned within a season or two
- Your energy bills are noticeably higher than comparable homes in your neighborhood
- You can feel temperature differences of several degrees between rooms with older windows and rooms with newer ones
Modern replacement windows with double or triple panes, low-E coatings, gas fills, and tight compression seals eliminate drafts entirely and maintain their performance for twenty to thirty years. The upfront cost is higher than a weatherstripping repair, but the long-term comfort and energy savings make it a worthwhile investment when the existing windows have reached the point where repairs are no longer effective.
